SYNOPSIS
Many may find it hard to believe, but there was a time when Hip Hop music did not dominate all the charts as well as have artist cross over to pop status. Long before the days of platinum and gold success, a rapper's worth was in the DJ's placement within his mix. As the art form fought for legitimization, DJs were recording their performances and customizing music mixes for their loyal fan base, not only to make financial ends meet, but to also laying the groundwork for the street based culture. Ultimately, it would be the growing popularity and increased necessity of The Mixtapes created by DJ's that would serve as the lifeline to Hip Hop, as it grew into the most celebrated art form.

This documentary will take an unabashed look at how The Mixtape has served as a force to catapult the art form of Hip Hop, as well as the careers of the greatest lyricists. It delves into the socio economic times of not only the artist but the culture at large. As the mixtape culture is the catalyst for hip hop becoming such a force. With never before seen performance footage from artist such as Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, telling interviews with mixtape legends, such as Kid Capri, DJ Clue, DJ Drama + artist and industry insiders, such as Lenny S and Combat Jack, the massive impact of The Mixtape subculture will be unveiled. With an original musical score, this documentary will prove to be the most insightful and thought provoking account of the historic importance and present day relevance of The Mixtape.
